Bronchoscopy |
A test to view the airways and diagnose, or sometimes treat, lung disease. Tissue samples for biopsy may be obtained during bronchoscopy. A flexible device (a bronchoscope) is inserted through the nose or mouth, through the trachea (windpipe) and into the lungs. |
Colonoscopy |
A flexible tube (a colonoscope) is inserted into the rectum and a small camera at the end of the scope allows a view of the entire colon. Tissue samples for biopsy can be taken during a colonoscopy. |
Endoscopic ultrasound |
A narrow, flexible, lighted tube with a small ultrasound probe attached to the end is passed through the patient’s mouth into the stomach and duodenum. The ultrasound component of the endoscope uses sound waves to create visual images of the pancreas and/or other organs. Usually performed under sedation. |
Upper GI Endoscopy (also called EGD – esophagogastroduodenoscopy) |
Please see Endoscopic ultrasound, above. |
