Toronto Patient Education Session

On November 1st, CNETS Canada held its second Toronto Patient Education Day. There were over 50 attendees, an audience comprised of patients, family members, health supporters and funders. CNETS Canada streamed this session live as well and 43 attendees joined us virtually. We apologize to our online and in-person participants for the sound issues, which will impact the on-demand version as well.

Dr. Simron Singh, an oncologist and co-head of the multidisciplinary specialized neuroendocrine clinic at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s Odette Cancer Centre, started the day with the current treatment options and latest advances in the area of neuroendocrine tumours.

Louise Binder, the Project Manager for CNETS Canada, then spoke about how the Canadian drug approval and reimbursement systems work, how complex and long they are and the importance of patients in this process.

Dr. Korosh Khalili, a radiologist, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, spoke about important scans in the diagnosis of NETs and the role of the radiologist in NET patient care.

Dr. Shereen Ezzat, an endocrine oncologist at University Health Network, spoke about the symptoms, causes and treatment for paraganglioma and pheochromocytoma.

Dr. Calvin Law, surgeon at the Odette Cancer Centre and co-head with Dr. Singh, ended the Patient Education Day by speaking about the role of surgery in treating NETs and the challenges to this type of treatment.
